New Mexico Conference of Churches

Public Policy Position on Hate Crimes

We, the Board of Directors of The New Mexico Conference of Churches, join members of other faith communities in New Mexico in going on record in opposition to any crime against persons or property which is motivated based on race, creed, gender, national origin, color, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, disability or any other characteristic which is intrinsic to the being of an individual person or group of persons.

We affirm the dignity and the right of all people to live in peace, and find crimes based on prejudice and hatred to be offensive and intolerable in a community of civilized persons.

Furthermore, we encourage the congregations and parishes of our member churches to consider making a similar public statement.

Passed unanimously, May 23, 1996 at a regular meeting of the NMCC Board of Directors, meeting at First Congregational Church, Albuquerque, NM
